To keep a blog secure you must do the following things:
Upgrade it when ever you can this will make sure that all security loop holes are filled so people are unable to access and edit your blog
Use a strong password make sure it is long and unique and that you are the only person who knows it. Your password should be a mix of letters and numbers and should not include personal information. If other admin people need to access it then you can make other people admin but only make people admin if you trust them.
You can use CAPTCHA which is a randomly given string of alphanumerical numbers included to verify whether the user is a spammer or not as spammers are less likely to fill in the code as often. this can also put off people commenting on the blog as it is a time consuming process.
You can turn off comments on older posts so that they will not be able to be commented upon without the user's knowledge. this will ensure less spam as spammers tend to sapam without people knowing.
